Project Description

Paul Kratter

I was born in San Francisco awhile ago.

After graduating from high school I attended College of San Mateo where I received a degree in Graphic Arts. I spent four years at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA & graduated with a bachelor of Arts Degree in Illustration in 1980. It’s also where I met Tia Wallace & we married in 1981.

For the next 22 years I freelanced as an illustrator in the advertising field. I concentrated mainly on sports & wildlife subjects working for the National Football League, various Major League Baseball teams, The Nature Company & some zoos & museums.
I illustrated & wrote a children’s ABC book, the Living Rainforests (Charlesbridge Pub) which was honored in Communications Arts Annual in 2002.

Around this same time I became interested in the immediacy of Plein Air painting & started painting in the hills near my home. I soon had a collection of works & began to show in galleries & join Plein Air events throughout the country. My style changed over night, although my approach remained intact, utilizing solid drawing skills & emphasizing strong graphic elements.

In 2022 I won best of show at the Carmel Art Festival. I’m a signature member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association & California Art Club. I’m also co-chair of the San Francisco chapter of the CAC.
